On Freeze and Fish Mortality

Post by Harmsway »

Sho'nuf been cold lately. :cold

Big Bend Brian's post showing iced-up marsh in NE Florida made me recall Louisiana's hard freeze of 1989. Really did lose a lot of trout and reds that winter. :smt010

Heck, caught several reds after the freeze with frostbite burns on their backs. :smt022

So I was wondering how this year's cold snap here in the Big Bend would affect the inshore fishery.

I would appreciate any discussion/information forum members might offer. :smt024

Anybody seen any ice in the marsh? Any belly-up? :pop_1

To fish, or not to fish, . . . those are the answers.

I looked out there this morning and there was an extreme low around the Dickerson Bay area and I saw no dead floaties. Maybe the crabbers will have some better insight. Dead mullet will be eaten. Now the reds will not have to chase them.
