Thanks for clearing that up for me, RC. Maybe a ruby-lipped snapper?
For a while there I thought maybe it would turn out to be a grunt.

There are several photos that you have to study before you can definitely conclude that in fact that is a ruby red lipped snapper!

I would say that is an American Pink Snapper. Very elusive and slippery.

I think you are on to something there, PFK. I've only come across a few in my lifetime, and they all slipped away somehow.
