Wiring, Controls and Switches

I started over the weekend trying to figure out everthing on in in the console of my 191.

First: What does the switch in the center of the key console do?
I know the top is where the key goes and the bottom is where the lanyard clip (kill switch goes) What does the center toggle do?



Second: This is on the right side of the console and has a screw on top. I can't really follow were the wires go inside the console (it is a mess) I know it does go to power and ground.



Third: This is just sorta hanging inside the console. The wires appear to go to the toggle switch I mentioned above.



Fourth: There is another outside connection with a screw on top just right of the switch panel. It only has two holes and one wire is hanging inside and one goes to the power.



Last: These connections were inside the console. It appears to be wiring for something that is no longer there. Loran? Sounder?



Anyhelp would be appreciated. I am going to try and clean out all the unneeded wires under the console. Needless to say it is a mess.[:)]

Wow, that is a lot of questions. Tha toggle switch looks like some type of choke. And the receptical on the side of the console looks like an accessory plug maybe someone put in for a spotlight or something? Not sure, good luck with your quest.

OK the toggle switch is easy. That is for the choke on the motor according to the picture on it.
The second picture is of a quick disconnect for some type of electronics as is the forth picture.
The third picture looks like a warning buzzer or something along that line but it is hard to tell from the angle in the picture.
The final picture appears to be some type of electronic connection and an antenna cable. The antenna cable is on the right in the photo.
Now without looking to where they go and what is under there that is what they all appear to be.

But on the toggle switch (choke) You press in the key in to activate the choke, Why would it have two ways to choke?

Buzzer makes sense

I figured as such on the electronic conncetions and disconnects

Anyone any ideas what they would have been used for? If I will never have any use for them, those will be eliminated (at least the wires in the console.

Mac, I agree with the above explanations and can't add much, but I will say that choke toggle switch is your friend in gettin her running when cold. Seems the manual sez for starting, advance the throttle very slightly, hold that toggle up til she fires off..don't let her wind too many times, before giving it a break. It might take a couple of times. After it's started, flick the switch as needed, til it's warm enough to run on it's own. That's how it works for me. Did you get a manual yet?

As far as the push key choke, that's how my Nissan works. I don't think that is standard for Yam throttles. 'Don't know why it would be there unless it was a shade tree fix to the other one not working or something. Maybe Wevans, TC or someone else will know for sure. If you need me to look up something in the manual for ya, give me a shout.

You might have it on the key switch, the key is not the standard Yamaha look, it could have been replaced. I will test the toggle switch when I get a chance. I can clearly hear the click when I use the key switch for the choke. I also noticed a manual choke switch on the front of the motor.

Probably had the ignition replaced and the new one used the key. That is how most newer ones work. I am surprised the prior owner did not tell you about this stuff. If you can get in touch with them that would be a valuable resource of information.

The guy I got it from had only owned it a short time ( shared the key choke, but I doubt he knows anything else),
I don't have contact info on the family that had it the rest of its life. I know ia marine tech bought it new and his son got the boat after he passed.

Might try to get that contact info on the orginal family.

Yep... My yammer has the same ignition plate and operation: Key can operate choke, switch can operate choke and finally, the manual lever on the motor can operate choke. As far as I know, only the lever on the motor is fully "manual"... The other two are electronic. I've never used the toggle before, and I have no idea why they were made that way unless the same ignition plate is used for different motors and it's cheaper to just leave the toggle on there than to manufacture a whole new plate... Who knows?

I feel your pain in figuring out wiring though. Here's a couple of pictures I took before and DURING the dismantling of mine:












Those are six of about 50 pictures I took! Every wire I disconnected or pulled was photographed. I used some blue tape to mark them for identification during the re-installation. What took me 15 minutes the other day would have taken me HOURS without the pics!!!

I don't have any new pictures worth posting... YET! I've got an epidural today, so I won't be at the boat today. Tomorrow, I'll snap some pictures of the wiring harnesses in the bilge (they sure are pretty and clean now)! Pictures of the wiring bundles in the console (half-way done now and they sure are pretty and CLEAN). I've got all of the hatches/plates down on the deck with finished paint on them!

Progress!!!!! I'll get some pictures up by this weekend... She's almost ready for the motor to go back on though! YEAH!

Bad news though: My wife was there with me last night and said, "We should look at how much this whole project cost us." WHAT???? Uh-oh! I said, "Why? It is what it is and that could only upset us." She says, "Well, it would just be nice to know."

Depending on the location, the three hole female receptacle may have been for an electric reel or lights for night fishing. does anything happen when you flip the toggle? If your choke works off the key I doubt the toggle is even connected. Just looks like it is.
