We had two warm days (50's) two weeks ago. Got the boat out, started her up, ran her 10 minutes in the driveway, turned her off and looked down to see fuel/oil running out of the cowling and down the foot. No fishing those days. Spent my time fixing a split fuel return line.
Today the high was 51 degrees clear and sunny so Dan and I hit KenLake. Took his boat because he wanted to try out his new Lowrance HDS 7 with side scan. Pretty sweet sonar. Unbelievable how you can mark structure, cover and fish.
Wind was out of the NE at 5 - 10 all day. Water temp was 46 degrees. We fished points and pockets at the mouth of a few bays. Fish seemed to be holding in 13 - 20 feet around bars and creek channels. We caught two largemouth in shallow water at the end of the day.
I had 5 largemouth. Four went 2 1/2 to 3 pounds and one runt. Dan had 6 bass. 4 largemouth, 1 spotted bass and 1 smallmouth. I caught most of mine slow rolling a chartruese spinnerbait. Two were on a bleeding blue chrome red eye shad. Dan was fishing a bone colored red eye shad, white with blue glitter tube, road runner, and a small crankbait. Most of his fish came on the tube and red eye shad.
Fished from 10:00 - 3:30. Fish were lethargic and you didn't even feel em bite. You just knew you had one when you picked up the line. My biggest fish came after I let my red eye shad sit on the bottom for about a minute while I picked a tangle out. Reeled my line in, picked up on it and there he was.
All in all, great day on the water. Been waiting for this day for three months. A few more warm days and maybe a warm rain and they will turn on.
Equipment Note:
Used my new BPS Carbonlite 7' MH rod with a new BPS Rick Clunn 7.0:1 reel spooled with 15lb P-Line. Love that combo. Think I even might like it better than my Carrot stick/Curado E7 combo. I like the bigger handle on the carbonlite (compared to the carrot stix) and that Rick Clunn reel is smooth as silk.
