Gulf of Mexico Oil

Post by big bend gyrene »

Guessing this won't upset the greenies on here, but for those of us that use gas as our means of propulsion... :smt011

Interesting that as the old communists zig to the right, Nobama seems desperate to turn us into the USSA.

The Obama administration is poised to ban offshore oil drilling on the outer continental shelf until 2012 or beyond. Meanwhile, Russia is making a bold strategic leap to begin drilling for oil in the Gulf of Mexico. While the United States attempts to shift gears to alternative fuels to battle the purported evils of carbon emissions, Russia will erect oil derricks off the Cuban coast.
Scare tactic. Even if we do deep water drilling in the gulf, it won't be in Cuba's EEZ. Not unless we secure the contracts, which we won't since Russia has them. Likewise Russia won't be in our EEZ unless they secure those contracts.
Offshore oil production makes economic sense. It creates jobs and helps fulfill America's vast energy needs. It contributes to the gross domestic product and does not increase the trade deficit.
This is a definite maybe; or maybe not.
Higher oil supply helps keep a lid on rising prices, and greater American production gives the United States more influence over the global market.
This is hogwash. More supply won't significantly lower the price at the pump. Big oil will auction it to the highest bidder, like maybe China, before they let that happen.

Will it give us more influence? There's not enough there.

I could continue to pick this article to pieces, but it's late and I'm tired.
Cuba has rights to the area in which drilling will be conducted under an agreement the Carter administration recognized. From Russia's perspective, this is another way to gain leverage inside what traditionally has been America's sphere of influence. It may not be as dramatic as the Soviet Union attempting to use Cuba as a missile platform, but in the energy wars, the message is the same. Russia is projecting power into the Western Hemisphere while the United States retreats.
This is like being afraid of the boogey-man.

And Obama didn't make a deal with Brazil for us to give them billions for THEIR oil exploration... just a bunch of scare tactics from that rag, the Wall Street Journal...
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1000142 ... 24166.html

That's ok... let the libs keep giving away our rights to other countries in the world while Obama does what he said, and I use his OWN words, purposely causing our prices to go up significantly to curb our appetites/save us from Gore's climate fraud. You libs are just paving the way for someone who'll do what the BULK of American's want... drill, baby, drill. Here's a link to Obama's words... Charles, care to tell me the Brazil/Obama links are hogwash too?

Good morning.

Well, forgive me for being obvious, but if they explore for it, drill for it and recover it; someone is going to buy it and use it.

Well, Charles, forgive me for being obvious, but either you didn't listen to Nobama's own words or you don't believe him...

Yes, I heard what he said. This fool is as much a fool as the last fool to hold that office.

Now, do you want to talk about cap-and-trade, or would you rather continue to discuss financing Brazil's oil exploration efforts? Or would you rather discuss the topic that you started this thread with; drilling in the Gulf of Mexico?

One key point that I haven't seen stated on financing Brazil is that them owing us money gives us a leg up on oil they produce. Another is that we can likely get that oil for reduced cost if we take partial repayment of the debt in oil.

It's not just about jobs or "use their's first". It's about transfer of wealth. Listen to T. Boone Pickens. He advocates using our natural gas and changing out transportation fleet to run on natural gass. What was the numbers he quoted? 750 billion dollars a year was leaving this country @ $125 a barrel for oil. We are a debtor nation folks. We are all paying interest on that debt daily. Drill ALL our oil, tap our natural gas, federally tax what leaves our country to help with the national debt and stop all that money from leaving our country!

EVENTUALLY we will change to a greener country and not have the need for fossil fuels as we once did. Why not use our supplies before that day comes? If we change our energy needs in 100 years (and all reports say we have much more coal, oil and natural gas than a 100 year supply) what good will massive reserves of these resources do when the need no longer exists?

Seems like just plain common sense to me, but wait..... That's right! There is very little of that in our government.

Amen, illinoisfisherman.

Captkeyser, sorry for not chiming back in. Been extremely busy working... someone's got to finance all the wealth redistribution the democrats love so much. Can't wait for the five years of tax increases we're about to be hit with before a single extra person gets any "free" health care. :smt012

FHC, everybody USED to owe us before we started selling our souls to the reds. Take China for example, we can't even keep up with the interest we owe them much less the money we keep asking them to loan us (and yes, libs, I understand Bush and other Presidents did it too but Obama's tripling down on spending so he's all the dirtier).

Sad thing is we'll have to answer to our kids and grandkids for our financial irresponsibility in the not too distant future.
