Got crabs?????
Got an invite to go chase some crab crunchers today - jumped on the chance. Went 2 for 6 - biggest was around 40lbs.....should have had some more but will take what Mother Nature gives us. Thanks for the ride Ricky

Re: Got crabs?????
Filet and release?
Love sight-fishing for those critters. When I lived in Pensacola, it wasn't unusual to see a 17-foot center console with a step ladder with a cobe fanatic up top, looking for fish.
Did you catch yours on spin or fly, Chalk? Either way, they're fun.

Re: Got crabs?????
Dave - we saw a ladder today - we got one on a jig and another ate an eel. Yes, I used live bait today
. Ricky said if he got a few more we would break out the 12 wt before the season ended....we could have done it today. Heard that two have been caught on the fly by the SWE guys this week.

Thanks for sharing the report, Chalk.
Don't know how often you chase them, but if often might want to consider tagging the shorts. Details on free tag kit in the link below... just takes an e-mail, and Read is a super nice guy.

Re: Got crabs?????
Yeah, they eat real well.
Did you see any of the homemade towers constructed from plumber's pipe or PVC? They always look so seaworthy.
Not surprised more folks are targeting them with the fly rod. I've got a few eel patterns that should work.
I testified before the FWC a few years ago asking them to consider giving cobia game fish status (like reds, no commercial sale). No dice. There are too many restaurants in the Panhandle and along the East Coast that serve it up every night during season. The stocks seem to be holding steady now, but as dumb and curious as they are, it wouldn't be hard to put a serious hurt on them. Of course, I've now jinxed myself into having a 75-pounder refuse my bucktail jig this spring.

Thanks for the link, BBG. I'm going to order some. Are they the spaghetti nylon barb tags?
Also just ordered a DNA swab kit for 'poons. You use a little pad to swipe the mouth to collect a sample. To order a free kit, email:

Silverking, yep... almost sure they're the ones you're describing. Here's the best link I can share that shows one close up. Just e-mail Read and he'll send you the tags and the plunger tool.

Nice Cobia Chalk. I'm glad to see some fishing photos again. It's been a long hard winter.
