Hooked up with an old tournament partner for a day of R&R on the mighty Flint River. Got to the Sportsmans Club dock in Albany just as daylight was peeking out. My partner was already waiting. (since 3:00am) He thought he might need a few more hours just to help his fishing handicap.
Headed up the river to seek out the elusive Flathead Cat. Decided to Bass fish up instead of just running. The surface temp. was 65 degrees. The wind was calm. Water was slick, with absolutly no sign of movement. Started worming the ledges. Wasn't long before Blake had a hook-up. Big, fish to say the least. The 5-6 pounder came up and wrapped on a surface snag. Just laying there flopping. By the time we got to him, he was gone. Heart got started then. Shortly after that, it was my turn. Hooked up with another "nice one" but my 12Lb Big Game acted like 4Lb and he broke off.
This went on all the way to our Catfish hole, with Blake landing a number 2Lb plus Bass, and my breaking off a few more times. Located large fish hugging the bottom, so we anchored and commence catching bait. (hand size Bream) Set out our Cat rods and settled in for wait. While waiting for Mr. Flathead, we ocupied ourselves with Crappy fishing straight down under the boat in 20 foot of water. Hauled in a steady stream of Crappy all day. Just as it started getting dark my Penn 320's clicker started talking. Great expectations of a 30Lb Flathead crossed my mind. Instead It turned out to be a 5Lb Channel Cat. Still a good ending to a fine day of fishing.
Many, many fish caught, but I didn't need any, so few kept by my partner.
