My uncle had a new regulation book and asked what the "keep check with myfwc.com" note ment beside red snapper so I go to show him and find this, posted April 5...every capt ive talked to has told me they now catch more red snapper then grouper yet they continue to say we are in short supply cant figure this one out...

Red snapper regulations are in effect for all waters of the Gulf of Mexico. The recreational bag limit is 2 fish per person and the captain and crew of for-hire vessels (i.e., charter boats) are prohibited from harvesting red snapper. The open harvest season in both state and federal waters is currently June 1 through August 14. However, the 2010 open season in Gulf federal waters is expected to open June 1 and last for 51-60 days. NOAA Fisheries Service has tentatively defined the recreational red snapper season closure date for 2010 as July 24, 2010. This season change is part of a proposed federal rule that would increase the red snapper quotas in the Gulf of Mexico and could be adjusted in the final rule. NOAA Fisheries Service is accepting comments on the proposed rule through April 14, 2010.

The FWC will discuss federal consistency action that would make the state red snapper season consistent with the new federal season at its April 28-29 meeting in the Tallahassee area. If this proposed rule is approved at the April Commission meeting, this decision would be final and the rule will be filed without further hearing.
