Last day of vacation

Post by fishinfool »

I went on vacation with a friend to the mountains of N.W. Georgia. It was beautiful. The vistas were breathtaking. The drive through the mountains was spectacular. The cabin was great. The view from the deck was awe inspiring. Had a wonderful time, but I missed not being on the bay chasing Reds and Trout.
Today was my last day of vacation and I really wanted to catch a fish before returning to work tomorrow. I needed a lot of rest after driving over 7 hours yesterday and all the vacation activities. I wanted to get up at the break of day but it was just not going to happen. As it turned out I awoke at the very early hour of 10:30. Got a cup of coffee and bounced around the house for almost an hour before deciding to head to the lighthouse. After all the preparations were done and I made it to the ramp it was almost 2:00 pm. The high tide was at 12:45 and was supposed to be heading out fast. I really wanted to try and get to my Redfish spot before the water ran out. So off I went. By the time I finally got there the water was still up enough to fish the spot easily. I threw all my best offerings with no success. I figured it was going to be a hunt to find the fish. I worked all the nooks and crannies until I was able to fool a 14"Rat Red with a spoon. Not wanting to go home empty handed I kept working the general area when a 18 1/2" Red took my spoon. It was close quarters and was difficult, but I bagged him and in the cooler he went. I was going to go out to the flats in search of some Trout when a likely looking area caught my eye. I cast my spoon past a tiny indentation in the grass. Just as I was retrieving it past the dent I got a strike. Set the hook and nothing. I missed. I cast to the same spot and as my spoon passed the indentation in the grass, tap,tap again. I set the hook again and whoa nellie the fight was on. This was a much bigger fish than the 18 1/2 incher I had landed 5 minutes earlier. As I said, the quarters were close. There was barely enough room to turn my 14' boat around. This fish ran from side to side. It went end to end. He also went to a grass point and dug in. It took me a minute to work the boat to an angle to pull him out. Then the fight was on again. Each time I thought I had him whipped, more drag was taken and it was back to the tug of war. Finally after what seemed like an eternity, I was able to subdue Red-zilla. Since it was such a short time, I was able to revive the shorter Red and sent him swimming away. That made room in the cooler for the 25 inch beast that I had just netted. It was then that I realized that the memory card for my camera was in my computer at the house. I had forgotten to take it out after organizing some vacation pictures the night before. After I got home I was able to get a pic of my catch.
Soon after that I went to the flats looking for some Trout unsuccessfully. There was a squall headed my way and I really wanted to get home before it hit. There too I was less than successful. After I got drenched and just about to the ramp, the rain quit. Well it was late enough to call it a day by then and as far as I was concerned it had been a great day.
I was going to post a pic of Red-zilla but the pic processor website is not working.
I am NOT looking forward to work tomorrow, but the thought of doing it again this weekend will get me through.

Good report. Always good to get the salt water back in your system after being land locked for a while ain't it.
