Franklin County prepares to defend the county’s shoreline from the worst man-made disaster in American history

Timber Island Boat Ramp in Carrabelle Closed.

Location to serve as the primary launch area for County “Boom” deployment
Apalachicola, FL June 9, 2010: The city of Carrabelle has been selected as the primary location for Franklin County tier 3 oil containment boom (more commonly known as “boom”) deployment activities. The Timber Island county boat ramp will serve as the main point of entry for nearly 92,000 feet of boom. The oil containment boom is the first line of defense to minimize the impact of oil migration into valuable natural resources. The boom is critical as Franklin County braces for potential landfall of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill that began fouling Pensacola Beach last week. A secondary county location at Lombardi’s Seafood Landing Park will serve as an additional deployment site and will be used to deploy approximately 47,000 feet of boom.
Both county ramps (Timber Island and Lombardi’s Seafood boat ramp) are closed to the public until the oil response operation is complete. While the oil spill response efforts continue, alternate boat ramp locations are available. The alternate boat ramps include:
• Marine Street in Carrabelle is city owned and has 2 ramps. There is no fee to use this facility
• Hwy 98 in Carrabelle (beside C Quarters Marina) is city owned. There is no fee to launch
• Moorings Marina on Hwy 98 (at the foot of the bridge.) There is a $10 fee to use this facility
• Lanark Village Boat Club on Hwy 98. There is a $10 fee to use this facility

The ramp has been opened for the Saltwater Classic. However there is limited to no parking.
