1st Trip

Post by red_yakker »

I went offshore with my buddy Ben yesterday (10-17-10). At the first spot (25'), I drop a 2-hook chicken rig with half a cigar minnow on each hook, and start loading the cooler with black fish. After a few minutes of that, Ben starts dropping live shiners to the bottom and catching short grouper. It looks like fun, so I join in. My first "big" hit of the day came shortly after, and had me cut off almost immediately, :x . A few minutes later, Ben get's his first "big" hit of the day, and lands a barely legal Gag. The bite died completely shortly thereafter, so we headed to the next spot (30')

The next 2 spots (30-35') give us a few more black fish and grunts, but no grouper, so we decide to move on. The last spot of the day (45') was a little more exciting. We started catching short grouper again. I measured a red grouper that was about an inch short, Ben got broke off, we each lost what felt like a nice fish, and then Ben's rod gets slammed. After a few minutes, I gaff a Very Nice 14lb Red grouper :) (On half a fillet of grunt!) I try the same thing, but get no love from the keeper size grouper, and then the bite died.

We headed in with one gag, one red and a box full of black fish and grunts. :lick: We were both dissapointed that we didn't get any more grouper, but we each had a gallon bag full of meat at the end of the day. Sorry no pictures, forgot my camera and my phone.
