Reel and Rod
Need suggestions for a reel and rod set for ten and eleven year old grandsons. New or used.
Someone out there has grandchildren and have bought them a fishing starter reel and rod. Please tell me what you bought, if they like it and is it holding up.
We fish inshore in the gulf and possible some freshwater.
Any information would be helpful and appreciated.
Thanks

Re: Reel and Rod
Shame you weren't able to make it to the fishing clinic last weekend. They could have picked em up free along with a tackle box. I wouldn't spend a bunch of money...for now...just get something simple to use. Reel that will handle 6-8 lb line. Stay with an inexpensive spin cast closed face for the time being and plan on trash'n em at the end of a couple of years depending on how much saltwater use they get. I've still got a couple that are older than that and they work fine.

Re: Reel and Rod
I started my kids and grand kids off with the same equipment that I use.
They are all proficient with top quality baitcasters and spinning rods.
They prefer the baitcasters.
They have all been fishing since they were 4 and 5 years old.

Re: Reel and Rod
You can usually find the open face Shimano FX2500-FX4000 with a decent rod combo for around $20-30 at walmart. They are great combos for inshore/freshwater. My boys (13 and 15) still use theirs and we have had them for about 5 years now and have held up nicely with just a quick freshwater rinse.

i agree with JT:D
Re: Reel and Rod
I have found that kids learn how to throw a spinning reel very easily and love to be fishing with the same things that the grownups use

Re: Reel and Rod
Thanks for all the good advice. I knew we must have a lot of daddies and granddaddies out there!
Anyone care to comment on a Shakespeare Ugly Stick, med light, 7' rod with an Extreme (EX50) Spinning Reel.
The rod would be about $30.00 and the reel $49.99 at BPS. A $20.00 discount on a $100.00 order. Spool the reels with 20# test PowerPro which would be almost covered by the discount.
How would this work?

Re: Reel and Rod
Depends on the youngster. I don't believe we've been provided that info yet. (IMO) for me it would also depend on how often I would have access and have them in the boat with me. If we're talking about a 4 or 4 1/2 youngster 3 or 4 times a year...I believe a 7' rod and 20lb is too much for someone to learn on. (jmo) I still believe 6-8 lb test then put on 20 lb leader if you want is all you need. The lighter line will let them throw further with less effort ...again (jmo).SS-342 wrote:Thanks for all the good advice. I knew we must have a lot of daddies and granddaddies out there!

jt's grandkids prolly taught him how to use his
.

Re: Reel and Rod
The Ugly stick lite is a great rod
but the dif. between the 6'6" and 7' is considerable. The 7' is much more limber and takes a bit of getting used to "great for lures and such, but the 6'6" is a better poping cork rod". The regulare Ugly Stick is pretty stiff all round "but I always used the med/heavy stick"

Re: Reel and Rod
This is because Wevans was beat with an ugly stick as kid and has therefore become attached to it.

I don't have any kids yet- But I take a lot of kids out fishing. All my buddies with kids seem to call for me to take them out.
I'd go with a Zebco 33 to start. The Ugly stick is great OR a similar generic rod.
Expect to lose one over the side ...
After they master that give them a regular spinning reel!

I agree. You might look at the 733 though. It's a little more substantial for those larger hookups. I bought my son (10) one with a 7 foot rid and he uses it for bass fishing. It would work well on the flats.
