Lethargic Fish

Post by kirt123 »

Just curious as to what temps trout and reds get to the point that they will quit biting for the most part. I know reds are more cold tolerant than trout but I remember hearing from someone once that trout seem to stop biting for the most part at about 44-45 and reds closer to 40. Is this true or just BS? I have caught them at pretty low temps before but just wondering what the consensus is.

I always thought the trout and reds bit better when the temps dropped below 40 (air temps)....or maybe they're just easier to find in those temps.

They eat when they are hungry or opportunity presents itself.
Some times less food.
Some times they eat slower.
But...they eat.

Sorry I meant water temps not air temps, I seem to remember an article I read, not sure but it may have been one writen by Keaton guide Pat Mcgriff, (maybe he would see this and chime in). I know snook have their cold tolerances also which are not as low as trout and reds. Snook generally stop biting when water temp gets a little below 60 and like last winter when water temps got below 55 they will start dieing. I know I read the same about trout and reds somewhere but like I said dont know if its true or not. I just remember seeing that it was like 44-45 degree temps that trout stop biting and around 42 for reds. On a side note, some of the best bites I have had before were when the air temp was below 20, water temp was above 45 however.
