Aucilla Fishing 12-19-2010

Post by reelcatch »

Well I decided to work yesterday and fish today since the weather was so bad. I got a late start for several reasons but got to JR's around 10:30 and picked up some live shirmp. After getting thelow down from JR I had a game plan.
At the ramp and lanched by 11. I turned to go up the river about 200 yards and killed the motor. Nice hole right there and I anchored within casting distance. First cast 20" red, nice start. Second cast 22"red!!! This is gonna be a good day. I spent thenext 45 minutes catching reds in that slot alsmost every cast. It was like I parked on top of a school!!! Then the bite turned off when the tide turned. I still maaged to catch few here and there until it started moving again. Then the bite was back on.
I would up keeping a 22" red and one nice sheepshead that somehow got there before the reds did. I wish I could tell you how many I caught but I honestly lost count. At one point I had put a popping cork in the water to soak and then threw a jig with a shrimp. Hooked up both of those and boated them. Put the jig back out and had another. Three 20 something reds in the bottom of the boat. I usually let them settle down a little before putting them back in thewater.

JR hit the nail on the head. I spoke with four other boats at the end of the day that had gone out the river and also up the river. They had no luck. I caught a couple more to show em where to go then left for the day. What a day on the water!!!!!

Nice trip. I haven't spent any time on the Aucilla. Where is the ramp?

The ramp is off Hwy 98 down from JR's store. Stop in there and ask when you go.Can be a little tricky to find. Watch for rocks in the Aucilla till you get to know it!!!!! They are all over the place.

An old man that thought me how to fish that river always warned, "there are rocks as big as cars in this river!".
Its a wonderful day in the neighborhood!

Hey...Reelcatch....did you put out a couple of barricades to mark the spot??

Sounds like a banner day to me. Thanks for the report.
