Redtrout Shootout selected for Angler Action Program

Post by RedTrout »

The Snook and Gamefish Foundation is pleased to announce the 2011 Redtrout Shootout as the first official tournament to participate in the expanded Angler Action Program.
The Angler Action Program began last year as a way for the Snook and Gamefish Foundation to create a baseline of snook in Florida. More than 2,000 hours of snook fishing were logged by recreational anglers on both coasts, providing valuable information as to the general size, number and pervasiveness of the species. This information is shared with the Florida Wildlife Research Institute in an effort to help biologists get a correct assessment of Florida’s snook stocks.
More importantly, it gave recreational anglers a voice in snook management for the first time in the history of the state.
Due to the success of the snook program, the Florida Wildlife Commission partnered with the Snook and Gamefish Foundation to expand the program to include seatrout and redfish.
This is where the Redtrout Shootout comes in!
Beginning with this very successful tournament, we will begin asking recreational anglers all over the state to log in to the Angler Action Program on www.snookfoundation.org/data.html and log in their catches. The entire process takes less than 5 minutes and includes the county you fished in, the number of reds, trout and snook you caught, the sizes of those fish and whether they were released or harvested. One of the most important questions is total amount of time spent fishing for each species.
“The Redtrout Shootout is very excited to be the first tournament selected to take part in the Angler Action Program,” Redtrout Shootout President Brian Hurley said. “This is a program that will definitely benefit anglers in this area and I can’t think of a better place to kickoff a program than right here in the middle of some of the best inshore fishing in the state.”
The Snook and Gamefish Foundation looks forward to a long partnership with the Redtrout Shootout and all of its anglers. With the help of Redtrout Shootout anglers, and recreational fishermen all over the state, the Snook and Gamefish Foundation looks forward to a successful rollout of this exciting new program.
Thank you for your participation.
