At the snipe again...

Post by bman »

Got out this afternoon with a buddy Jodie and his dog, Timber.
Jodie and Timber worked the birds- but Timber was excited and had a hard time staying close early. I think she was as excited as we were.

The first bird always deserves a photo- and this one was nice enough to fall in the water

Jodie and I both laughed that we missed some easy shots and then hit some difficult ones.
Most of the birds jumped early today but several of those came back across to give us nice overhead shots and the beauty of a bird spiraling down from high.
As the afternoon went on the birds got sticky and we picked up most of them in the last hour of the hunt
We finished up with 14- one short each. We had our opportunities and if we did not have to get back to town we absolutely could have finished our limits.
But that was enough and we hiked back to the trucks to have a drink (water) and look at the birds.

Both guns today were 16gauge. Mine is the Browning A-5 above. It was my Grandfathers quail gun.
It shot true and I always get a bit nostalgic about shooting a gun my Granddad and Dad have both used to take game.
The SxS is Jodie's and was his Fathers as well... I'll have to ask him again what model. It is a beautiful gun with lots of engraving and scroll work

Timber performed well- finding birds quickly that would have taken us a lot longer to pick up.
We thought she deserved a portrait with the birds as well.

One last note- Can you guys believe tomorrow my wife is due to deliver our first child, a little girl, Marion Elizabeth.
What a sweet woman to let me hunt today. I picked a good one!

Awesome hunt! Surprised the little lady would let you get that far away on her 1st, but you need to enjoy it now. That little bundle of joy is going to change your priorities and time afield for some time to come.

I grew up with a sweet 16. It is still in my gun safe, but I shot it so much, I cracked the rear stock. Bird killing machine. I worked on my duck pond yesterday and I'm jealous!
Its a wonderful day in the neighborhood!

Nice hunt BMan, it looked like a beautiful day to be out there bagging some snipe. Good luck with the birth. You do have a great wife to feel comfortable with you heading off to hunt the day before your baby girl is due. I had a similar situation back in Jan. 2000, my wife encouraged me to go to the Sugar Bowl to see FSU vs. VT playfor the Champtionship even though our baby-girl was due within two days. All went well until my buddy and I got into the Dome and my cell no longer worked. It was a little nerve-racking not being able to talk for a few hours, but it all worked out in the end and I made it home before our first daughter was born. Needless to say, life hasn't been the same since she entered out lives.....

THAT DOUBLE BARREL LOOKS JUST LIKE MY OLD 36 INCH ITHICA, IT IS STILL A GREAT GOOSE OR TURKEY OR DOVE GUN. WHEN I BOUGHT IT THEY ADVERTIZED IS A (ITHICA FEATHERWEIGHT) AND IT WAS A LIGHT GUN FOR BACK THEN, I HAD A BROWING AUTO AND IT WEIGHED MORE THAN THE ITHICA.
