Old Tackle

Post by woopty »

Interesting article.
Makes you wonder what they used to have in their tackle boxes around here 12,000 years ago.
They have found the oldest example of human art in the world along the Aucilla (carved mastodon tusks), (insert joke here).
I don't believe I've ever seen ancient tackle from around here though.
Anyone know of local examples?

Old Tackle? You wanna see old tackle? The Old Man of the Sea PA (Futchcairo) let me look in his tackle box on a trip to Econfina a few years ago. There was some old tackle in that box, some homemade stuff too.
OD

One of PA's boxes. I think he brought several on that trip.

Here is an article about bone hooks found in the Aucilla. Some of you may know Jack Simpson. Jack has one of the oldest fish hooks in North America, if not THE oldest. What makes his find extremely unique is most of the ancient fish hooks taken out of the Aucilla are made from a deer toe bone, but this particular one was made from a Pleistocene horse, which means it dates back even earlier. I don't know all the details about it, but Jack is very interesting old man, and a hell of a source of information on Aucilla artifacts.
