trailer axle trouble

Post by cmatt »

I started noticing tire wear on the inside of a tire. I replace the bearings, but that didn't solve the problem. I remembered that a few trips ago i let the trailer tire fall of the edge of the culvert coming in the drive. I think it bent the spindal part back. I took off the tire and measured the hub face on the front and it was 87 & 5/16, the rear was 87 & 1/4. The top and bottom was the same; between the other two. So I assume it's bent back.

You see that the spindal is offset to the top. I assume this is to let the trailer be 2" lower to loading boat. I'm trying to avoid buying a new axle. The tow out is causing the inside of the tire to wear. Would the axle be okay if I roll the axle a quarter turn and cause the axle to have camber out on the bottom? Would it continue to wear with camber out?
Thanks for any advice you can give.

cmatt, I think I would consider buying a new axel for the boat trailer. As you probably know, they come with new hubs and bearings installed and would be a lot cheaper than trying to rig something and then have it break down with you on the highway. (expensive and time consuming), of course my son Will owns Capital City Trailers in Tallahassee. I talked to him about your post and that was his suggestion. I am sure you can find one around your hometown in Ga. Good luck!

TAKE YOUR TRAILER TO A GOOD AUTOMOTIVE ALINGNMENT SHOP, THEY CAN SET THE AXLE AND THE CAMBER TO WHAT EVER IS RECOMENDED BY YOUR TRAILER MFG.

After I took the axle out I measured again and tested it with 2 framing squares. It is already cambered out 1/4" in addition to being towed out, so I decided to go ahead and get a new one.

reelbad. I talked to your son today. He will have me a new axle tomorrow or wed. Looks like the Spring break fising trip at the end of this week is back on. Thanks for recommending him.
