St. Marks 05/27

Post by Gumbo »

Went out with a buddy yesterday for a few hours of fishing. Stopped at Bert Thomas Grocery and gassed up the boat, as was posted earlier they have non-ethanol marine gas, only on pump #1 (which is the furthest north), so be aware of that when pulling in. Really nice folks to visit with and the motor seemed to enjoy real gas.

Grabbed a couple dozen live shrimp at Jerry's and headed down to the new ramp. Only about ten other trailers in the lot at 8:30.

The long and short of it is I proved to be a really bad fishing guide. We started in 4 feet, then 6 feet, then an 11 foot hole, then out to a rock pile in about 12, then back in for more shallow water exploring around Stoney Bayou and the creek just east of the lighthouse. Managed to stay busy with ladys, blues, black sea bass, grunts and cats, caught on everything from the shrimp to chartruese jigs to a catch 2000, but didn't do well with putting food in the box. Caught 2 nice trout, one released itself boatside, the other came home and was delicious.

Was a bit more rough than predicted, ran in about 4:00 when we heard a loud thunderclap and saw a dark cloud over by Live Oak Island.

Water temp was 77.

There is a large green buoy up the creek that is just east of the lighthouse, not sure where it came from or where it might be going.

Hope to put more in the box next time but will not be heard to complain about a day on the water.

Thanks for posting your fishing report. Next thing better than being there is reading about it. Just a day on the water is a winner!
