Gotta be careful out there, folks
Three boaters went out Crystal River by the power plant during the big blow we had on Sunday. Two were found clinging to the boat. The third was not so lucky, and was found dead by the Coast Guard. The story is in the central florida newspapers (St. Pete Times, Tampa Trib).
Very sad indeed!
One man dead, two rescued from Gulf after boat capsizes
YANKEETOWN, Fla. (AP) -- One man was found dead and two others clinging to their capsized boat near the Crystal River power plant Monday nearly a day after their boat turned over.
The U.S. Coast Guard said Edward Calcani 71, of Beverly Hills in Citrus County was found dead by a rescue crew from Clearwater near a power plant channel. The Clearwater crew searched for eight hours before finding him in the foggy Gulf of Mexico.
Edward Calcani Jr., 34, and Larry Dates, 30, whose hometowns were not immediately available, were found clinging to the hull of the 16-foot skiff boat. None of the men were wearing life jackets when their boat capsized about 11 a.m. Sunday during a fishing trip, said Petty Officer Danielle DeMarino.
"They (Calcani Jr. and Dates) are lucky to be alive given the water temperature and the sea conditions," DeMarino said.
The Coast Guard said there were four to six-foot seas with 15-knots winds in the Gulf Sunday. The water was 56-degrees.
DeMarino said Dates and Calcani Jr. rescue was only made easier by the fact they stayed with the capsized boat, making them easier to spot.
The three men were reported overdue by a relative Sunday after they failed to make it home in time for the Super Bowl.
