St. Marks reds 9/24, 9/25

Post by Bullet »

We love fall fishing at St. Marks. As in the previous 4 trips this fall, we once again found the reds. Friday afternoon yielded 4 trout & a couple of black bass, exceeding our expectations for afternoon fishing.

Saturday a.m. had us out catching pins as the sun came up behind the lighthouse. After loading up on bait, we headed to one of our favorite oyster bars to find the reds awaiting our offerings. Immediately, it was ON !! We put our limit on ice & did the catch & release thing afterwards. We had a great morning.

However, Sunday a.m. was a little different. I don't know if it was the east wind or what but the fishing was definitely slower, we managed 3 reds in about 45', one accidentally released & the other 2 lost to sharks right in front of us. We opted to try another bar over in the East River. Cha-ching, the move paid dividends. All 4 of us caught many nice reds
No reds lost to sharks at this bar. Several reds caught & released after putting 4 "nice uns" on ice.

Our mornings have been really great for the last 1 1/2 months but the afternoons, we have not figured out.
We really don't like to fish from the boat & we have not determined where & how to manage a good catch while wading in the afternoon.
Any suggestions for some old wade fishermen to try in the afternoon?

We caught most of our reds on live pinfish 3" to 4" long. A few reds were caught on live shrimp. The reds were hungry, they may have even eaten artificial but since we had pins & shrimp (and we prefer fishing pins & shrimp), those were our offerings to them.

Hoping I'll be able to let you know they're still there, and hungry.
