Cedar Key offshore: 10/23 & 10/24 (short trips)

Post by Big Bend Brian »

Using a new online photo website and wanted to try loading some photos.

Since the kids didn’t have school last Monday (teacher planning day) I took a short trip leaving Ponte Vedra to Cedar Key last week with Casey & Kaitlyn (the wifer was on call and couldn’t come). We left late around 1 p.m. on Sunday but by 4 p.m. we were on the water aboard Plan B. Since we only had about 3 hours to fish we stayed close and ran seven miles offshore to catch a mess of black seabass. No problem catching them. That was fun but short and a tad bouncy too. Plan B’s 1998 Johnson OceanRunner just had a new Optical Sensor installed and it runs like it supposed to now.

Sunday we left at the crack of 9 a.m. (!!!) with a tad chill in the air. Didn’t have time to catch any live bait so we just ran to a favorite spot in 41 feet that I haven’t fished since moving from Gainesville (3 yrs now). Happily there were a few grouper here and we got to bring home 2 gag and 2 red grouper, plus a ton of white grunts for a Boy Scout fish fry we had this past Saturday. White grunts make for good “kid fishing” as it’s one after another and we could have sunk the boat with white grunts. Had to leave early to get back for a Monday night Boy Scout meeting so we got back to the dock at 1 p.m.

Seas were two feet out of the north with the wind picking up later in the morning. Inshore water temp was 68˚ F and in 40 feet it was 69˚ F with no weeds on the surface. No hits or mackerel off our flatline. Gotta love fishing on a Monday-only saw one boat offshore.

Hoo Yah!!
