St Marks 11/27

Post by mitchelltally »

Got a late start, but with the tides and the wind, we were in no hurry. Launched a the Fort around 11:30 and headed to the mouth of the river. Had my brother in law from Atl along for the trip. His first to St Marks. We stopped at the oyster bars and found a spot between all the others. Tried there for about 30 minutes with no luck. Decided to head out to the east flats. On our first drift in 3-4 ft. of water we got hammered by the under 15" trout bite. We were fishing with gulp on jig heads and also had a CT rig with a circle hook and live shrimp. We moved out to 6ft for the second drift and lost the bite completely. Good news was the sun came out and the wind disappeared. Moved into 5ft and the CT disappeared almost as soon as it hit the water. I set the hook and the drag started screaming. First thought was a big catfish or a shark, then my advesary broke the water. Big Red, game on. My brother in law was busy showing me another 14 3/4" in trout when I told him to set it free and grab the net. After a couple of trips around the boat and we finally get him close, and I here your nets not big enough. With half the fish in the net and the other in my hands we finally landed him. No scale on board today and my law stick only goes to 36". My estimate was 37"-38" and 25-30lbs. Caught many more small trout with a few keepers, but no more reds. Great day on the water with good people.

Nothing makes a fish bigger than almost being caught.

To fish, or not to fish, . . . those are the answers.

I'm glad the wind laid down for you. It has been blowing here all day long. The pond behind my house has white caps.
