I got one as well from Steve Stinson. "no subject" embedded hot link that will bring up a very belivable fake "MicroSoft Security Center" add for updated virus shield. Got to figure out how to get rid of it now. Figured it had something to do with the Club Party that is on Sunday so I won't be able to attend any way...

My anti-virus program stopped it from my computer. AVG RULES.
Stinson told me a unused Yahoo account was hacked. He found out and closed the account.

Sorry to all of you. I haven't used that account (Stinsonsw@yahoo) for a couple years. I closed the account yesterday in hopes of stopping any further problems.

Stay off those "fish porn" sites and that won't happen, Steve.

Sounds like the virus scans worked in most cases. Another example for why it's never good to open an email with blank or questionable subject matter. And yet another advantage of Macs over PCs.

Sounds like the same virus that got me a few weeks ago. You need to remove the program from your startup registry (in my case it was called "toolbar helper", or something like that) If you don't, it can steal the password to your new e-mail account and the same thing will start to happen with your new e-mail. Your anti-virus might have already gotten it, but you might want to check & make sure. Mine didn't (AVG, Spybot & Malwarebytes).

Red - I opened my control panel and did not find anything called "toolbar helper". The only recent installs were from Apple on 12/5/11 - an update to Quicktime Real Player and some sort of Mobile Device Helper.

Prior to that no softwares or updates installed since 11/15/11.

Would toolbar helper show up in my control panel under "Programs"?

My email that I have been using since 2009 is Mozilla. So far no ill effects or viruses have been sent out on that one.

Thanks for the help.

I believe the electric chair would be a good place for virus engineers. It's caused me to swith to apple. But I'm sure they'll find a way to corrupt their system also

I just found a program in my startup registry I didn't recognize (Toolbar Helper, or something like that) and disabled it. I can't remember for sure, but I think this is where I was able to see the file path to the folder containing this program's files. I just typed it into the address bar in "My Computer", selected the folder and deleted it (Before I could do this, I had to un-check the box for the program in my startup registry, and restart my computer. That way the files will not be "in use", and you will be able to delete them.) And no, I was not able to locate this program in the list of programs found in the Control Panel.

Oh, by the way. I may not be rembering the name of the program right at all. I would just look for anything that you didn't add yourself. If you're not sure what a particular program does, Google it.

Oh, and unless it's still happening, an antivirus program may have gotten it already. Most antivirus software updates on a pretty regular basis, and even though it didn't catch it in my case, they may have found a fix for it by now and sent out updates for it. In my case, the e-mails were being sent out randomly, but in two days my e-mail address had been used to send advertisements for penis enlargement pills like 30 times, each time to 5 or 6 random addresses from my address book! I'm just glad it was my private e-mail and not my work e-mail! Thankfully, most of my friends weren't able to open the attachment.
