Redfish Tips and Tactics

Hey this is my first post but have been on the forum reading and learning for a while now. Lots of great information here for sure. My question is what does everyone think of the redfish population between say.....keaton and econfina? I have been fishing this area as much as possible for around8 months to a year and am pretty decent and catching trout but the reds always seem hit or miss. My last trip I seen several reds tailing on low tide and wound up poling close enough to make a few casts and wound up with two. Is tailing something they do regularly or is it hit and miss? As you can see I really want to get on the reds consistently, sorry for the long post. Thanks for any input or thoughts......

They only tail when they are in shallow water feeding. If the water is deeper they feed the same way,you just don;t see the tail.

Sightcasting to tailing reds may be the pinnacle of redfishing. It is really cool to see, sneak to and cast to tailing reds. Shallow water = spooky fish. Cool and hard to do. It seems you have it worked out. The redfish population is great bx ecy and Keaton. I think we all would like to be more consistent, but that's why it's fishing not catching. Good luck

I've only found tailing reds during the winter around here. That's for two reasons, I've come to believe. 1. With the typical negative lows, it's easier to spot the fish in the shallower water. There's generally too much water in the summer with the higher tides. And 2. There's less for the reds to eat, so they are tailing, rooting around in the mud to uncover buried crabs, shrimp and worms.

As has already been pointed out, with the shallower water the fish are spooky so a stealthy approach is a must. Also, because the fish are focused downward, the casts have to be almost on top of their heads to get their attention.

Keep exploring and researching on your own. That's how most of us learned to fish this area. You're on the right track.

Yea when the reds are tailing that is by far one of the coolest things to see. And watching them inhale your bait. The reds just seem a little trickier to get dialed in on then the trout. But those big gator trout are elusive to.

I agree about the Gator trout.. One helluva rush!! If somebody can tell me how to post pics I would like to show my once in a lifetime ecofina gator trout.

JT, stop with the Texas pics and find Jr.'s. 30" trout caught in TST. I think there are some on Otto's site. That was the day I became the best net man in the area.
