Post by macdaddy »

The wife's big 50 b'day is in August and she wants to go to the Keys for losbster. We have never been down there so looking for some advice for a good guide. Any help would be appreciated.

Finding shallow water lobster after the mini season (last Wed. & Thurs. of July) is tough going. They usually get picked clean. Not saying that it isn't possible, but for lobstering after mini season, you might want to consider dive cert. to give yourself a better chance in deeper water or bump up your trip to the mini season. I have a friend that lives down there. Will try to contact him & see if he has any recommendations for guides.

If you are taking your own boat, you don't really need a guide. Just scout around til you find structure and look for antenna sticking out. We just pull someone on a rope behind the boat while they look down for them.

I'd recommend you contact Capt. Rich Burson out of Key largo -- www.rufishingyet.com

He's a top notch inshore guide for the back country and also does lobster trips. I know he'll do a good job for you. You may want to consider doing a full day trip and combining some great skinny water fishing with the lobstering! The cost isn't a whole lot more than a half day. I fished with him last August and caught over 100 keeper size Trout, Mangroves and Reds on a half day trip. Good luck with the bugs!
