6-21-2012 State Water Fishing

Post by Scoop Sea »

It seems like it's been forever since I posted about fishing, but here it goes....

My fishing partner and I headed out of Mashes Sands last Thursday in hopes of heading deep enough to catch a snapper, but as we headed south off of Alligator Point it was obvious that this was not going to happen. I run a 21-ft SeaPro and I want to make dang sure the weather is right before I head off too far. In turn, we headed to some holes I have in State Waters hoping to catch a legal gag. We managed to catch 2 keeper gags, a nice Spanish, a smoker king, a "just short" cobia (my fishing partners first cobia), and a hulk of a 42 pound cobia (my biggest ever). The seas slicked off, but we were having too much fun to run deep. We were back to the hill by 2:30 and fresh fish were consumed that night. I'd never had cobia before, but I cut it up into small cubes and fried it and both of our families really enjoyed it. I smoked some this weekend as well and it was surprisingly good that way too. I was thinking I would smoke it and make it into a dip, but it didn't last as I handed it out to guests for their thoughts and they liked it just like it was presented.

All in all it was a great day on the water and hopefully I'll get out there and grab a snapper before the season ends.

Tight Lines....

Chris

Awesome trip.

Cobia is great blackened also.

I had a 2000 model SV-2100 for about 8 yrs. The best thing I ever did for that boat was put a set of Bennett trim tabs on it. It improved the offshore ride 100%.

Well, I see I actually put the wrong date there, I must be "looking into the future". I looked at my watch to see what the date was (19th when I wrote the post), figured 2 days would be Thursday (21st) and I forgot to subtract the week timeframe back to the 14th. I was writing the post while watching the Noles' bball game, so I was distracted.

Steve Stinson: Can you advise where you got the trim tabs put on and about how much they run. My boat's a 2005 and it runs great, but I would be willing to take a look at other options that may improve it's performance. Thanks. Chris

Scoop: I bought Lenco 9"x12" standard trim tabs and a tactile switch for my 20ft bay boat from Hodges Marine Electronics online for just over $500 and put them on myself. Like Steve said, best thing I've done to the boat. Oh yeah, nice fish, too!
Yo, Bartender.. Jobu needs a refill!!
