6-21-2012 State Water Fishing

It seems like it's been forever since I posted about fishing, but here it goes....
My fishing partner and I headed out of Mashes Sands last Thursday in hopes of heading deep enough to catch a snapper, but as we headed south off of Alligator Point it was obvious that this was not going to happen. I run a 21-ft SeaPro and I want to make dang sure the weather is right before I head off too far. In turn, we headed to some holes I have in State Waters hoping to catch a legal gag. We managed to catch 2 keeper gags, a nice Spanish, a smoker king, a "just short" cobia (my fishing partners first cobia), and a hulk of a 42 pound cobia (my biggest ever). The seas slicked off, but we were having too much fun to run deep. We were back to the hill by 2:30 and fresh fish were consumed that night. I'd never had cobia before, but I cut it up into small cubes and fried it and both of our families really enjoyed it. I smoked some this weekend as well and it was surprisingly good that way too. I was thinking I would smoke it and make it into a dip, but it didn't last as I handed it out to guests for their thoughts and they liked it just like it was presented.
All in all it was a great day on the water and hopefully I'll get out there and grab a snapper before the season ends.
Tight Lines....
