Fiberglass matting--new stitched type the way to go

Post by Fishin 911 »

I have been doing some fiberglass work building a rear deck for my boat. I have been experimenting with some different fiberglass mat. There is a kind out that is stitched and not woven. It is a little heavier than the angelhair, but doesn't take quite as much resin up as the heavy woven roven mat. It cures with a pretty even surface that will sand down with a minimal amount of sanding.

Stitched has been around for awhile, it is stronger than woven. Woven interlaces the fibers at 90 degrees. Stitched commonly called Biaxial or Double Bias is interlaced at 45 degrees. The boat I'm building is made mainly of biaxial. Are you using epoxy or polyester resin?

Got some pics?

I'm almost through with the job. Just have to finish grinding off gelcoat in the boat where I am going to glass it to the boat. Gonna put the fuel tank in first to make sure it all fits, etc. The deck fits the boat perfect and is gonna be strong. Already stood on it..not much bowing at all...no cracking heard! :-D I'll take some pics of it and try to get posted.

I believe that it is polyester resin....whatever general boatyard resin is.
