FWC Ocala Outdoor Adventure Youth Camp

Post by Big Bend Brian »

Summer time is right around the corner and I’d like to pass along an outstanding Summer Camp that maybe your children might enjoy. This Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) camp has been in operation for over 50 years and is well run. I’ve sent three of my nephews to these camps as well as my son. All four have stated their camps were awesome. Just this week I signed up my 12 year old daughter for one as well-she’s excited about it.

These 6 day camps run from Sunday to Friday and are located near Ocala inside the Ocala National Forest (1.5 hrs away from Jax). Camps are offered over a 6 week period, are offered to both boys & girls and the tuition is $295, which includes everything. There are four (4) programs to choose from:

Anglers (Fish Camp)
Pathfinders (Hunter Safety)
Outfitters (Bowhunting Skills)
Safari (Wilderness Skills)

This program link gives more specific information about each camp: http://myfwc.com/camps .
Plus a second link with additional details and photos: http://www.ocalaadventurecamp.com/programs.html

I’ve also cut & pasted some camp information below my signature too. These camps fill up fast so if you’re interested don’t delay.

Programs:
ANGLERS - Fish Camp (Ages: 10-13)
Fish Camp is a NEW hands-on program of fishing and instruction for campers. This program provides valuable instruction regarding fish and their habitat, teaches various fishing techniques and cultivates a new crop of responsible anglers. All aspects of fishing are covered, ranging from fish identification and fish biology to boat navigation and angling techniques. Campers leave Fish Camp with an appreciation for the sport of fishing, as well as the knowledge required for ethical angling. Campers are provided with all the gear necessary . Upon successfully completing this program, each camper will receive a rod and reel with tackle. Campers also participate in swimming, canoeing and other traditional camp activities.

Pathfinders - "Hunter Safety" (for ages 9 to 14)
Pathfinders is our most popular and innovative program teaching campers how to be safe, knowledgeable, responsible hunters. Successful completion of this program exceeds the requirements for Florida's Hunter Safety certification. This program is led by certified FWC Hunter Safety Instructors and focuses on game, hunting and basic outdoor skills. Campers increase their understanding about game populations, habitats and their role as conservationist of these resources. Pathfinder participants gain knowledge by developing hunting and firearm safety skills that are used for a lifetime. This program includes range time in shotgun, rifle, muzzleloading and archery instruction. Campers also participate in fishing, canoeing and other traditional camp activities.

Outfitters - Bowhunting Skills (Ages: 12-14)
This new program expands on archery and bowhunting where Pathfinders leaves off. After completing the Hunter Safety certification, campers can participate in this exciting archery and bowhunting skills adventure. Campers will enjoy several nationally recognized and innovative programs. The "Explore Bowhunting" curriculum introduces participants to the many challenges and rewards of archery and bowhunting. These skills are taught in a fun atmosphere through interacting in various games and exercises designed to teach problem solving and decision making. Additionally, campers have the opportunity to acquire certification in the National Bowhunters Education Foundation's bowhunting course. This certification is required by some states in order to bowhunt there. Campers also participate in fishing, canoeing, swimming and other traditional camp activities.

(NEW) Safari - "Wilderness Outdoor Skills" (for ages 13 & 14)
This new program is sponsored by the African Safari Club of Florida, Inc. The curriculum takes you from the classroom to the field and teaches the participants outdoor skills and environmental awareness about our changing ecosystem. The Safari group examine wildlife habitat through hands-on experiences, teaches outdoor and hunter ethics, participate in shooting sports activities, hiking on the Florida Trail, and swimming to name a few of the activities. Campers take a canoe challenge down the Ocklawaha River and through a cypress swamp system where they will camp overnight on a high bluff overlooking Cedar Creek in the Ocala National Forest. This program exposes our future leaders to a variety of outdoor experiences for which they can make informed decisions on future environmentally sensitive issues. The Safari program is for the ardent camper and challenges the participants with rewarding results; a desire for the out-of-doors is recommended. Participants must have already completed their hunter safety certification to register for this program.
