Preventing rust on new parts?
I had a lot of rust on my trailer. So I beat scraped and ground all the loose rust off it. The treated it with Oscal that turns the rust into something else(black phosfate I think) Then recoated with zinc paint. I noticed after that 1 spring seems to be flattend out some as the trailer lists about an inch lower on one side. I may have to replace the springs. Is there anyway to permanently seal them from water before installing? Or at least treat annually? I read once about thinning grease or oil with something and brushing on them to waterproof. Thanks

SIMPLE SOLUTION, BACK TRAILER DOWN IN FRESH WATER AND RUN THE ENGINE ABOUT 5 MINUTES AFTER GOING IN SALT. I HAVE BEEN DOING THIS SINCE 1935 ON MY TRAILER AND IT IS STILL IN GOOD CONDITION. ABOUT 3 TIMES A YEAR I SPRAY THE WHOLE TRAILER DOWN WITH STP OIL TREATMENT AND REPLACE THE (OIL ) IN MY WHEEL BEARINGS. I HAVE REPLACE MY WHEEL BEARINGS

Wash the springs as much as possible, coat with zinc paint once or twice a year and that is about all you can do for them. Remember, when you launch the boat in the morning, it sits and dries all day, then gets wet again when you load in the afternoon and dries on the way home. When you get home and wash the boat and trailer you will never get all the salt off because it is dried on. You can however take a small pump up sprayer with a solution of saltaway and water and spray your springs after unloading and loading the boat therefore not letting the springs dry out first.

torsion axles prevent this problem all together

Re: Preventing rust on new parts?
Torsion axles do the job that springs do on the trailer, but they also are subject to rusting, even if they are "stainless". Mine did. One thing that helped was what was mentioned in a previous post: fill a pump sprayer with salt away and spray down the axle areas, the hubs, brakes, tires, etc. after taking the trailer out of the water post launch. I also tried CRC, but all of it is just slowing down the process that will happen in salt water.mbweimar wrote:torsion axles prevent this problem all together

Coat in thin layer of waterproof grease. The grease will attract dirt but you can hit with brake cleaner once a year & re-coat with grease.

This is kinda what I had heard about. But they thinned it with something that would let it flow into the cracks then the thinning agent would evaporate leaving the grease.DEMON wrote:Coat in thin layer of waterproof grease. I have not seen a freshwater ramp on the way home from Ecofina or Keaton. Do you know of any? I go to Boston thru Montecello.FUTCHCAIRO wrote:SIMPLE SOLUTION, BACK TRAILER DOWN IN FRESH WATER AND RUN THE ENGINE ABOUT 5 MINUTES AFTER GOING IN SALT. Buy it, use it and you will like....if you have rust it will stop it. I coat my engine with it, trailer parts that are subject to galvanic corrosion. My trailer jack stand was rusting, sprayed it a year ago, it hasn't spread anymore.
Note - if you have mixed metal on the trailer - you will have galvanic corrosion, only way to stop that is to separate the indifferent metals.
