Was debating on keeping boat in dry storage at Shields Marina ($105 monthly for fully enclosed - $85 for partially enclosed - 16ft Wahoo). Many reasons to do so but wondered if anyone had any experiences with them doing this. Don't want this to turn into a Shields bashing session , just was curious of the pros & cons of the process from those of you that have been there and done that. Have always found the folks there to be pretty friendly . . .
By the way, a majority of the fishing I do is out of St. Marks.
I checked into dry docking there as well and found their prices for my boat the best compared to 2 other marinas. Decided not to do it, figured it was better to pay off boat first. I have done a bit of business with them and have always been satisfied with them. Brett and Chuck are good people.
Used to work for the Shields many years ago. Good folks. One question I have. A former poster on this site who keeps his boat there told me a few months back that they were going to remove the partial covered slips on the right just before you get to the store. Something to do with the water contamination from the metal on the sheds. Said he would have to find another slip. Might be something to ask them about.
I have kept my boat at Shields for over 2 years now. First in the covered dry storage and now in a wet slip. They are great people, always very helpful and always willing to help. Call em when you are on the way down, they will have your boat in the water, gased, iced and ready to go when you get there. I put it in a wet slip for my own convience. They will put your boat on the cleaning rack when ever you want for cleaning or maintanence. I highly recommend them.
Better late than never. I kept my boat in Shields' dry dock for about 2 years. I ended up moving my boat from Shield's to Panacea Harbor a year and a half ago. I wanted to start fishing further west and Panacea allowed that, while being just as close to my St. Marks offshore spots. Also, I didn't feel I was getting the customer service from Shield's to which I was entitled. Ended up saving me $$ and being an overall good move for me.
Pros- #1 = Convenience
Without the hassle of trailering, you'll use your boat more often.
Won't put wear and tear on your tow vehicle.
Marina will fuel your boat.
For me, my boat stayed cleaner being in storage rather than on a trailer in my yard.
Cons- #1 = Cost
Have to pay higher fuel prices.
I don't have a trailer so I'm limited to fishing out of the marina.
If you want to do your own service or install electronics, you have to go to the coast to work on your boat instead of just walking into your back yard.
All in all, I find keeping the boat in dry or wet storage and overall benefit, if you can afford it. However, I'd like to try and find myself a good, used trailer so that I can expand my fishing areas on occasion.
