St. Marks Scallops 07/02/13

Waited a bit on the weather and watched it all around us but things stayed nice East of the Lighthouse for us to get some time in.

Started west of the Rock Garden in about 5-6 foot of water (tide was high), and a quick scout down. Water clarity wasn't great and not a single scallop.
Moved just to the other side of the rock garden in about 4-5 foot water, and water was clear and cool. Almost made me wonder if there's a spring open around there or if it's just the rain water because it was noticeably cooler to me. Got a few there. Moved a bit east and in towards Grey Mare and water still clear and cool and a few more. In all about 3 dozen in a few hours of looking. Had to work slow and steady around the patches of what I call "pillow" grass. That curly puffy stuff that they sit on. Only spotted one on the long grass. No sharks and no jellyfish!

If you want meat then don't bother but for nice swim and clear water and maybe a scallop or two it's fine.

Thanks for the report. We have enjoyed scalloping at St. Marks the past couple of years. Guess our first trip will be Lanark or Keaton since they seem to not be at St. Marks this year.

Karenia brevis, the Florida red tide organism, was not detected in a sample collected this week in St. Joseph Bay (Gulf County).
