St. Marks Cobia 7/13/13

Dad and I checked the wave forecast for Saturday and it looked promising. It looked like it was going to rain in the morning but a little rain won't melt us! To our surprise we were the only boat on the flats when we were catching bait about 730 that morning. Once we had a live well full we sprinted 32 mph all the way to first # in 35 feet...it was calm to say the least! Up on araival we noticed the TERRIBLE water clarity, we couldn't see our pinfish 1 foot under the boat. That water mixed with a 83 F water temp absolutely shut the grouper bite off. We decided to run deep and fish some deep #s in hopes of finding cleaner water, like 65 feet. Once again the bite was nonexistent. The water clarity was equally as bad out there. We fished a dozen spots and caught about 8-10 short gags. Absolutley pitiful! On the way in I talked dad into stopping on the way in to try and find a cobia. Passed Bigbendgyrene out there giving it a go. Good to see another bbf member out there. Stopped and first cast with a pinfish under a cork and I'm hooked up with the first keeper cobia hooked on our boat in about 8 years. Back and forth we went and finally dad gets a net under him. He was very tired when we netted him so no slaps to the "nuttacles" would take place on our boat haha! He measured 35" and was about 15 pounds. Good way to end a slow day of offshore fishin! -Tight lines

Was indeed out on Saturday, but without luck so you made the right choice to fish whatever spot you fished!

Was trying my best to put one of my cousin-in-law's kid on a trophy cobe but since she seemed more interested in texting her boyfriend than actually fishing, we were slow to the draw and lost three cobes. Great to see you had better luck.

Thing I loved most about Saturday was that after a dadgum week of watching my pool turn green, having my yard turn to sponge, and starting a frog farm, the waters were as slick as I've seen all year and we didn't have a drop of rain hit us, though heavy clouds were all around and we could see it raining inshore!
