Red Snapper season is off to a bad start

Post by Tidedancer »

Well Darn. The boat is ready and the crew was set for a deep trip today. After looking at the rain pattern and the sea conditions we are staying on the hill. 2 to 3 foot seas with short wave periods makes for a nasty day on the water. The rest of the week looks like crap too.
TODAY
EAST WIND 10 TO 15 KNOTS...BECOMING AROUND 10 KNOTS IN
THE AFTERNOON...AND 5 TO 10 KNOTS IN APALACHEE BAY. SEAS 2 TO
3 FEET...HIGHEST OFFSHORE. DOMINANT PERIOD 3 SECONDS. PROTECTED
WATERS A LIGHT TO MODERATE CHOP...BECOMING SMOOTH LATE AFTERNOON.
A CHANCE OF SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS.

Yep, gonna be 5-7 straight days of crappy seas. NOAA WAVE WATCH 3 shows a tropical system visiting our Gulf waters by tomorrow and then wandering around for several days. Weather Underground also shows some similar paths. Maybe it will veer left and visit the lower Yucatan. Gonna need a big boat this week. Might as well say, a little fool hardy, too.

Sorry about all that Tidedancer. Maybe you'll catch a break when it calms down, find a box of Grouper, a few kings, and perhaps a Cobia that is on the move. RS are over rated any way. Where do you fish out of? If you need a crew, send me a PM. Maybe I can drive over, buy some gas, stretch a line, and send you home with some more fish.

Thanks for the offer Ifishtoo. Catching the fish in not a problem with me or my crew. Having a 32' boat with long legs is nice for the deep runs but having to be beat to a pulp to get out there is not fun. Fun is the reason we go and the meat in the box is a bonus.
Being retired and working part time at C-Quarters Marina gives me a lot of opportunities to go out and chase the fish. Some of the folks I fish with or fish with me don't have the luxury of being able to go on the good days when the seas are calm to fill the freezer with great fish meat for the family. I feel bad for them that the fall season is only 14 days long in federal water (where most of the good size Red Snapper are). The grouper bite has been good for the last few weeks and the cobia are here and biting. Sea Bass are still out in the deeper water but will be in closer soon. Red fish and trout are all over the bay now and the inshore folks are having a ball with this. So we have lots of fish to catch but the Red Snapper is a great table fair for many and it's just sad that we can't keep 1 or 2 on our trips. So maybe next week the weather gods will smile on us and we can get out to the deep water again.

Got a trip to Mexico Beach planned for the last weekend of the season as that was the only time I could make the trip, hopefully the weather will settle down and we can get out without getting beat to death. It was all we could do to fish in the bay when we were over in June...

Just talked to a friend of mine, who went out today with three others. He said it was 3-5's.
Nothing on rod and reel but, the divers brought up some fish.

I went out today with Ranaman and a couple of other guys. We wanted to fish and the 2 foot forecast we knew wouldn't hold but figured it would be our only chance. It turned out to be 3 to 5 and maybe even 4 to 6 out of Cbelle I'd say. There were very few 3's in the mix... We only got out to about 50 foot and of course there was a boat on the spot we were going to so we poked around and found another area close by on the bottom machine. A couple of flounder, a nice black sea bass, a spanish caught bottom fishing, and some small grunts and triggers was all we could manage, even with the extra chum me and Todd added to the water.
