food plots?

Seeing plenty of game at the new house, but I'm always interested in making them more comfortable.

Do you guys typically plant multiple types of food in one plot so they are available at different times or do you plant multiple times/year in the same plot. What are some of the best choices for planting in N FL or S GA? If planting in area that will see a fair amount of shade does that change the answer?

We plant cow peas or some kinda pea....ours are mostly sunny areas. Just pour a little corn or horse feed couple, three time a week

They love iron clay peas but they need to be planted in the fall. Also rye, oats or wheat are good planted in October or November. Above suggestion with shell corn is a good one.

How big an area are you talking about? May want to set up a feeder and mineral lick for now and plant in the fall. I plant oats, wheat, rape or turnips, some beans or peas(these dont last but deer love them) and crimson clover(this takes over the plot in the spring and last till march or april). I mix it all together(exept rape and clover that go on top after covering other seeds)

ICP's can be planted in the Spring, Summer and Fall (cold weather kills them) but, if you plant a small area the deer will wipe them out in a day or two. Don't waist you $$ on rye grass, grain rye yes but not rye grass. How big of an area may depend on my answer.

Hit or miss is dead on , as an crop advisor I would tell you to check you PH if you are doing any clover or the cole crops. I do samples for many of my customers here in gainsville area. the most successful try to keep something year round.

ok, so size of the lot is an interesting question. I only bought 15.5 acres, 700 feet on Iamonia, about an acre of yard and the rest wooded. The property is mostly old growth, but a small stretch of planted pines along the road. However, my lot is surrounded by plantation land (except for the lake side), about 160 acres on the plantation. Beyond that you hit some of the large, well known plantations.

What is a realistic size for a plot? Can I be effective with a couple .25 acre plots? The feeder to watch them from house is going. Mineral blocks are sure to follow. Animals are already present, but I would like to funnel them a little bit and get a little better idea what all is running around.

You might plant your plots on both sides of your drive. There's plenty of sun there. Wait until early spring and then plant again Late Oct. early Nov. I throw out sweet horse feed. It always seems that it rains the next day or so and turns to mush. I'd start right now with some feeding stations. My .02 cents.
