i custom build all my bait caster rods in the spiral design, the main advantage to the spiral is as follows, more sensitivity, better casting more distance, line is never in contact with the rod at any time,no rod twist, better fish control as in red fish or most larger fighting fish, jacks, small shark, large spanish and so on, i have people tell me on a daily basic how much better the spiral wrapped rod is compared to conventional rods.
answer to your question if you ever fish spiral no matter large or small you will never fish straight up again.
