Joe Hutto - My Life as a Turkey

Joe Hutto is a naturalist who spent a good bit of time living in Wakulla County. While living there he chronicled the time he spent raising a brood of Wild Turkeys. PBS Nature has done a really nice version of the story called My Life as a Turkey. If you have some time check it out, it's surprisingly good.

After the turkeys he went west and lived with a herd of Mule Deer. I haven't watched that yet, but I plan on watching it when I get a chance.

His book, Illumination in the Flatwoods, about the Wakulla turkey experience, is an excellent read. Every time I see a wild turkey I think about it and wonder if they are somehow related. Saw a flock take flight near my property this week, right after seeing three deer bound into the woods. Also spotted four bald eagles recently in areas never seen before. Mother Nature is really resilient, if we give her a chance.

I watched both programs on PBS when they first aired. You just wouldn't believe the amount of dedication he had for both projects. Most anyone I know would have given up on the deer long before they made that first contact. And he had to dedicate his entire life to those turkeys while they were young. The line between passion and insanity can be blurry at times!
