spotting scope or binoculars
When I am out fishing and I see in the distance a surface disturbance I would love to pick up some optical device and see if it is dolphin, feeding frenzy, or crazy loons drinking beer. Never had either type so would like some suggestions.

if you have the coin, these are fantastic.

but at more than $1k, they are spendy. From all that I've read, you will want a 7x50 binoculars. Any more than 7x and they become too jittery without stabilization. 50mm objectives will give you more time in the dawn/dusk to use them. West Marine has a set that is consistently highly rated. Other brands are commonly highly rated and I suspect it comes down to if you are a ford or chevy man(brand loyalty).
here are a couple threads to review.

Re: spotting scope or binoculars
I use a pair of Pursuit brand waterproof binos from Bass Pro for duck hunting in my kayak. I initially purchased them because they were the cheapest, waterproof binos I could find, and I figured I would lose them by dropping them overboard anyways. After a full season of complete abuse while duck hunting salt and fresh water, getting rained on, dropped in bottom of the kayak, I can't recommend these enough. Great product at a great price.
