2015 Scallop Seminar

Post by red_yakker »

For anyone who is interested, the Taylor Soil & Water Conservation District is hosting the annual Scallop Seminar in Steinhatchee again this year. We will have 3 speakers again this year. Lt. Scott Lee, FWC Law Enforcement will be there to discuss boating/scalloping laws and safety. Lt. Lee has done an excellent job the last couple of years of opening up a dialogue with attendees in order to clarify many commonly held misconceptions about what you are supposed to do or not do on the water. He even answered a few questions concerning hunting last year.
We will also have Dr. Stephen Geiger, marine biologist for FWC. Dr. Geiger will discuss the scallop abundance surveys and what they say about the long and short term population trends. He knows more about scallop biology/behavior than most, and can answer most any question you can come up with to do with scallops.
Geoff Wallat, Taylor County Marine Extension agent, will also be there to discuss and answer questions to do with the county reef program.
There will be free snacks and bottled water plus a drawing for door prizes. The meeting is free to all. You do not need to be a Taylor County resident to attend.

And for those who cannot attend, but have questions for any of the speakers, I can make a list and post their replies on this thread.

Also, feel free to copy the flier and post it wherever you think someone may be interested.

Also, 2 years ago, we had a local charter captain donate a 1/2 day scalloping charter (with restrictions) as the grand prize for the drawing. We were unable to find a captain to donate last year. If any captains out there would like to donate (it can be any kind of trip, doesn't have to be scalloping) something similar, we'd make sure you are recognized at the meeting, and we'd make sure you get singled out for recognition in our letter to the local paper thanking all those who donated.
About half of the attendees from previous meeting have been non-residents who were in town to go scalloping, so it may be a good place to go pick up a little business.

There's a plug in today's Tallahassee Democrat, in the Fishing Column. Hope you have a good turn out.

Just a little update.
Lt. Scott Lee was recently promoted and has moved to Panama City. We were contacted by Officer Clint Bean from the Taylor County FWC office, who informed us that he could fill in for Scott. I've updated the flyer to reflect this.

Just wanted to bump this one to the top one more time.

The weather's looking like it's gonna be questionable for scalloping this weekend, but if you're coming to town anyway, you might as well come to the seminar. You might win a door prize, and you may even pick up that hot tip that helps you go get your limit before the bad weather hits.

I may give it a shot in the morning if it looks like I can dodge the storms.
