St. Marks 5/21

Post by birddog »

Put in at Shields marina about 6:45a.m. Proceeded out the river and headed west. The flats looked like glass until after 12:00 today. Before the sun got up good you couldn't distinguish the water from the sky on the horizon. It was beautiful.

Anyway headed west and fished all day from Sprague Island over to Goose Creek Bay. Like I said the water was smooth and it was perfect for topwater. The trout however didn't seem to really want to inhale the lure. They would mainly short strike at it. But we were able to catch one every now and again enough to keep it interesting.

After the sun was up good , the temps were rising and we were begging for a little wind, just to cool things down a little. After 1:00 p.m. the winds picked up and it actually got pretty choppy.

Ended up with 15 keeper size trout (16"-22"), brought home 8, and a slew of shorts. Caught trout on chugbugs(gold), top dog jr.'s (red and white, green back with silver belly), zara spook ( silver), catch 2000's (red amd white), soft plastic jigs under equilizer cork (candy corn, red with white curly tail, electric chicken), dead shrimp under equilizer corks, and yozuri's crystal minnow.

1st thing this morning chased redfish all along the shoreline against the grass. Threw everything we had but got no takers. Chunked gold spoons, topwater, and jigs, even shrimp but they didn't want to play.

The bite really slowed about 2:30, we spent another hour or so fishing, then decided to head to the hill.

This was my 1st trip out of St. Marks and I really enjoyed the area. The only downer for the day was that afternoon trying to load up, some toolshed decided to do everything under the sun on the boat ramp, except move out of the way. Wish C.S. Marine would have been there.
