Dog Island, Tuesday, 5/25

Post by Dale Hollow »

Took my New York in-laws and my wife's college roommate fishing around Dog Island on Tuesday.

Water was very calm somewhat out of the North changing to the Southwest by the end of the day. Water was a little stained.

2 - 16' bass boats and a total of 5 people. (Thanks to Skeeter for taking the day off to help host my family!)

Got to the dock at 8 am, 300 shrimp later, we were on our way. (None of our visitors had experienced salt-water before.) Once to our first drift, 2 keeper trout, 6' water. My visitors were very impressed!

Numerous ladyfish, a few cats, puffers, and a 3' shovel head. My family had a blast!!

The rest of the day was spent moving from grass bed to grass bed and picking up many fish on both boats.

Total for the day between the 2 boats:

15 keeper trout - 18-20 (2 greater than 20)
4 spannies
20 or so shorts
numerous lady fish (they really liked catching them)
1 shovel head catfish (father-in-law - 30 minute battle!)

All taken on shrimp and pinfish. Only one of our party tried hard and soft baits with a few nibbles, but no fish.

Highlight of the day... Threw a short trout back that didn't make it and it was floating on top of the water. Watched a Cobia around in the area but wouldn't take it or our baits as well. Then, an American Bald Eagle swept down and made 2 passes at it before nailing the fish and carring it to shore! What a show by mother nature. All this occured with 15 yards of the boat!

Off the wate by 3:30 pm. Water was up to 1-2 feet rollers... Trout for dinner by 7:00

Great day on the water (and no sunburns!! even though it got very warm out there)

Those folks weren't the only ones who got some great memories and stories! Nice day on the water!

I am going to be down there most of the weekend. Have to get my trailer fixed tomorrow morning :-? , but in the water after that! At Lanark....if there's room!

Sunday I hope to fish all day...

And Monday, my boy and I will dive together for the first time :o :D ; and I am hoping to fish the Monday sunset.

Thanks for the inspiration! I may not get the 13-er to the reef, but the shoal will be tested!
