Mexico Beach Fishing Question
Thinking about taking a trip to Mexico Beach at the end of the month and trying out some of the near shore artificial reefs. Bottom fishing and maybe trolling. I see there are several public numbers just a few miles off the beach in 50-70ft of water. Anyone fished out there before? What should I expect to catch?

Re: Mexico Beach Fishing Question
Last week we caught sand trout, lane snapper, sharks, flounder, small grouper and rock bass off one of the towers about 2 miles off the beach. Also had a huge king sky on a mullet I had freelined out the back of the boat. No hookup though.
About 6-8 miles out around the car body reefs we caught a 50# cobia and the triggerfish were trying to jump in the boat.

Re: Mexico Beach Fishing Question
Pretty much anything is possible, my buddy caught a nice sailfish inside state waters off MB a couple of weeks ago trolling for kings, the Car Bodies site is well known and Kingfish hang there, I've also caught "sammich" dolphin near the Car Bodies site.
They have a lot of artificial reefs in the area, check out the MBARA web page for details http://www.mbara.org/mexico-beach-artificial-reefs.cfm Personally I've never had much success at the really close in reefs as they were some of their early attempts and not much left of them, the Car Bodies site is pretty good though especially on the deeper side. Obviously if you want to bottom fish I would find the deepest place I was willing to run to and then look for some of the reefs.
If you want to come home sore the Duke Energy reef FKA the "Shady Lady" (its an old shrimp boat sitting upright in about 100') is pretty well known for large Reef Donkeys, about 17 mile's from the MB Channel mouth.
