I decided it was time to go scout out some "new" grouper numbers, since it is so hot I don't like to anchor much. I have a bunch of LORAN numbers that I need to convert to GPS, so it sounded good to me. Mostly moving and looking, not much stopping.
Well, I guess a bunch of other guys decided to beat the heat and get to Lanark early, too, because there were a lot of boats headed down at 5:00 a.m. Not bad, though, getting in at the ramp, except about half the people either don't realize it is supposed to be a double ramp or they are just too lazy or unskilled to do it that way. So they plunk their boats right in the middle of two lanes. Oh well....
Anyhow, the wind was blowing pretty brisk out of the WNW, and I started to get a bit worried about a long run offshore. I stopped and caught a half dozen blue runners just in case, and headed to the first set of numbers. I knew by this time that it wasn't gonna be no "flat" run. The chop was up to 2-3', and very close. I had to keep it about 15 knots, and working the throttle a lot to keep from killing myself on some of the bigger troughs. Anyhow, went to the 60' numbers, and marked some likely bottom. Tested the bottom and had nice bites, so that area looked good.
By this time I was getting pretty beat up, so decided to come in to mark some other numbers in about 50'. Two more nice areas, and so many nibbles on one I had to anchor. Managed two red grouper (they are supposed to be "stressed", but they seem abundant to me) and decided that was a legal limit in fed waters, so time to go in.
By 11 the wind was dropping, and the run back in was very nice. Off the water by 12. Wow it is hot....!!!!! Not too bad getting in the ramp, about a 10 minute wait, and folks were quite decent about taking their turn.
