Anodized Aluminum?

Post by dbplug »

Went to West Marine yesterday, found some 3M marine aluminum polish and restorer. Stuff works GREAT! I am always impressed with 3M products, 5200, gorilla snot, etc.

Question: Says not to use on "Anodized Aluminum". What is Anodized Aluminum? How can I tell if it is Anodized?

If it is not "aluminum color", black or gold is the most common color for anodized aluminum, but I think they can do most any color. Paint or powder coating has a thickness to it that will cover up machining marks, anodizing does not. I wouldn't think you should use the polish on these surfaces either.
You could have clear coat over aluminum but it seems to me like if you have oxidized aluminum that needs polishing it would be OK to use.
