Econfina 8-24

Post by DixieReb »

I don't know if anybody's fished the Econfina or not, but we went last Wednesday. Arrived at 8am, tide rising. Tried topwater at mouth and got 1 good hit and miss on devilhorse. Went over to Possum gap and tried for reds but no action there either. We noticed the water around the mouth is very dark, couldn't see bottom in 2 ft. water. So headed west toward Aucilla, water clearer but bite slow. Only caught hardheads and few pins, missed 1 good trout while catching bait.
About 1030, moved over east of river, finally got some bites and managed 3 trout, only 1 keeper. drifted around in 4-5 ft. water and found some good black bass, got 4 keepers and some throwbacks. Lots of ladyfish, lizards, remoras and other bottom stuff out there, bites came easy. Ended up with 1 trout and 4 bass, had fun but quit at 1:30 with tide really going out. If waited much longer, might have had worse time going in. The water is real stained, looks like it needs some time to clear.

The old rule I always used was if you could see the prop on your outboard....the water was clear enough to catch trout. Anything darker than that is too stained.
Good thing there is most of the time something on the bottom....or a lot of trips would be a bust.
