The Cobia are here

Again the Cobia haven't let me down. This time of the year, ever year, for the past 6 years, I've caught several cobia out of Keaton Beach. The local ole' timers at the marina don't believe I'm not running off shore to catch them, but the last weekend my son and I went out from Keaton at 3:00 pm and by 4:00 pm we had two cobia, both were about 49 inches, just shy of 40 lbs. I've hooked about 10 more the past 3 weeks, and kept one each trip. I've been out 4 times and each time the cobia are there. What water depth are they in, BU?

There are in 4-7 feet of water. I've caught most of them on live pin fish, but a few have hit large jigs and plastic eels. For me they have been in the same exact place each time. It's my little honey hole.

That is really cool! I have never caught a cobia, and neither has db

. and my fishing goal of the year was to catch a cobia or a king. With the 13'er, I am always encouraged by reports like yours: not deep water! How far out were you? Were you around a certain kind of structure? Or just flats? Did you have the pins under a float? What leader?

Sure sounds like fun! One of these days....!

Oh, and how do you think the fall weather will affect cobia? And, oh, what were the numbers for that spot????

I don't want to give up my exact spot, but I'm closer in than the last channel marker going out of Keaton. I usually find them following a ray, but sometimes they are just out there swimming alone. I've caught them under a cajun thunder before, but last year and this year I've had them break on me. I haven't tried the blue thunder float yet, but I like the Lemon Fish rig made in Gulfport, MS. They can be bought at Big Bend Marine in Perry. A lemon fish is what us Mississippi Boys call a cobia. As far as the leader. I like at least 6 feet of 100# mono. I've never had a cobia shy away from it. If you excite them they will nail it and run. A very sharp hook is the key too. I prefer the Owner live bait hooks, at least 7-0. Hopefully they will still be there tis weekend. That's if I can afford to go, the truck is in the shop

Thanks! I was sorta kidding about the exact spot, as I don't get out of Keaton Bch ever. But in about how deep water were you? I am just wonderin' the odds of hookin' up with one of these fellas in my 13'er......

The water depth is anywhere from 3 - 7 feet. As far as a small boat, I've caught several out of my small 14' boat. It's fun to have a fish pull your boat around.

I bet I know where your fishing, so would CSMarine.......Nice to know there still there, probably heading south as we speak though....
