St. Marks 9/28

Post by tin can »

I put in at the fort at about 1030 this morning. Went east from the lighthouse. Fished several spots around the rock garden. Finally got into fish about 1400. They were right where Jumptrout51 said they were. Found them in 3.5' of water out from Stony Bayou. However, I didn't fare as well as he did. I caught something over 40 trout. I was catching a fish every cast for about 30 minutes. Out of the over 40, I had 3 keepers, 1 at 16", 1 at 19.5" and 1 at 22.5". The wind was blowing hard out of the west. The water was tea colored when I started fishing this area. The wind pushed the muddy water into this area, and the bite stopped. I caught 1 short after the muddy water moved in. The surface temp stayed in the high 70's all day. All fish were caught on a CT with a jig and chartruce grub.

If the water will clear up, it won't be long before the fish really turn on.

Sure beats working. :-D

Pa, I tried topwater, and a catch 2000. Lots of floating grass. However, a friend of mine was catching a few this afternoon on chug bugs.

I went back to the same area today (9/29). The fish are there. They weren't as agressive today. They had to be coaxed into taking the bait. A firend of mine, and 2 of his buddies were catching a few on chug bugs about 1500 this afternoon. They had not caught a keeper when I left. The water was cleaner today. It 's still stained, but not muddy. and, I could see the bottom in 3'. I haven't kept any fish, so Sir Reel's information that their bellies are empty is interesting. There is a bunch of bait fish in the area I'm fishing. The blues were crashing the bait today.

The water temp got up to 82 degrees before I headed in at 1530. It was a little warmer today.

I probably caught 40 fish again today. But only 1 keeper at 16". Most of the fish are right at 14". Pa is probably correct in thinking the fish are feeding all night on the full moon. The fishing should be some better by the weekend. Maybe I can find some time to get back out there.
