Recording fishing trips
just an idea...
I realized the other day that the reports I've posted are a record of many of my fishing trips. That's good news to me because I've always wanted to keep my fishing stories to read someday. My kids might enjoy it too. With that in mind I've started to add some details that will help tell the story.

I enjoy sometimes taking the time to put a lot of details into my reports, to try to capture the intangibles, the subtleties that make the experience. I am also trying to learn to include the details that may be valuable from a "scientific" standpoint, including what works and what doesn't. Thus I think reports of nothing caught are just as important as the others. When I say "science," I really just mean giving a complete picture to anyone who reads these posts: if all were of successes, one would get an skewed view of what we find out there.
But it is time consuming, even if it is a short report, and since we enjoy reading and maybe posting them, we encourage them and each other. And on that point, I am glad that you, Litt, are giving any detail you do: always interesting.
As for doing a diary that can be handed down, that is nice idea. Even just a log is a good thing in any sport. You can look back and learn better from your own experiences too, as memory fades.
I bet a notebook with pre-printed blanks and made with that new, real durable waterproof "paper" would sell well for that purpose.
Frankly, at this busy stage in my life, or with all the distractions, I don't know how well I would keep such a log, but a simple one would not be too difficult. A lot of anglers keep them.
I was in a gentleman's office the other day, and in his reception area he had, on display, a very old fishing log that he bought at an antique store or something or maybe it was a gift from there. It was leather bound with old yellowing pages, and the notes were pretty brief, reporting the catch, etc., but certainly not with many full sentences. It was really a neat object, and if it was my grandfather's I would have really loved to have had it.
The reports on here, like so much in cyberspace or in only digital form , will never be found in an antique store and are destined to be lost.

I have been keeping a log of my fishing trips since 1964. I'm into my third notebook....and belive me it makes for some interesting reading. I was in the Air Force for about 10 of those years and it brings back memories I can't begin to tell about .
I put the date...tide..who went...water condition..bait used...who caught what.
I put all this into my computer....took weeks and weeks of input. Well wouldn't you know the danged contraption crashed one day and I had to reload windows...(hadn't backed up nothing)...and lost every bit of the log.
I still have it in my notebooks....and they are truly prized.
I have been fishing saltwater for over 30 years...mostly Aucilla. You wouldn't believe some of the entries I have for the late 70's and early 80's for Aucilla.

Recording fishing stories is all well and good. This is the only place I have found where I have freely recorded some of these experiences and shared some secrets. I am also one of those fishermen who have been fishing off and on for 30 or more years. My parents took me and my brother fishing on the bridges and catwalks around Largo and St. Petersburg when I was 4 years old. I don’t remember how many times we actually went fishing, but I can still remember going fishing. Those trips really “set the hookâ€
Time is the most precious commodity we have in life, stay focused.

Aucilla
An example:
Arrived Aucilla landing about 0730 hrs on Dec 4, 1979. Must have been over 100 rigs there. Preacher, his son-in-law and friend were the crew. Fish (trout) were being caught right at the landing. You didn't even have to crank your engine. Many times almost every cast brought in a trout.(there was only a 12 in minimum then....no number limit) At the end of the day....we had 280 trout...and 1 red. Almost all were caught right around the landing. Everyone was catching fish. Two of my friends were there....they had over 300 trout at the end of the day. MIrroulures and jigs were the bait. We cleaned fish till after midnight that night.
I can't begin to tell or imagine why trout are so hard to come by now. It would seem the large numbers caught during this period reported on would result in lesser numbers now.....but...even some years later...when the limit was dropped to 10.....the day before it went into effect.....we caught 110 trout at Aucilla in my boat..were checked by the game warden....almost everyone was catching trout right above the landing.
I do believe it was over a year before I caught a limit of 10.
