New to area, looking for sugggestions

Post by Marv922 »

I am new to the area and have been away from inshore saltwater fishing for several years. I grew up fishing in South Mississippi and South Louisianna, but work took me inland for several years. Now l live in Bainbridge, GA and would love to take my two sons, ages 11 & 6, for some wade and shore fishing this weekend.
I have a 20 ft. pontoon boat (hangover from lake fishing and crusing) but would like to look the area over first to see if it can be used in this area.
I would appreciate any suggestions on locations for the wade & shore fishing or comments about the use of a pontoon boat in this area. Please throw in comments on favorite baits and lures as well. I know all fishermen have 'em.
This is my first posting, however I have been reading the forum here for a few weeks and appreciate greatly the input from all of the anglers. Reading about fishing and the outdoors is a great way to start off the day.
I will report the good, bad , and ugly of my trips (well I may leave out the ugly) and look forward to continued participation in your group.
Best of luck to all!!!

Welcome aboard!
Can't help on the wade fishing....but I can comment on the pontoon! I have a friend that fishes out of shell island (St. Marks) on a 20 ft pontoon. Just have to watch the weather and be smart about it!
If the wind is blowing, stay in the protected areas!

Favorite lure: pink and green saltwater assassin, with 1/4 oz pink jig head!
And, live shrimp for back up!

Good Luck!

New to The Area

Post by Fisherman989 »

If I were to start out as a rookie to the area...and wanted to wade fish a bit...I would start out at the St Marks lighthouse. It's a beautiful area...good place to start...and easy to find. Just go to Newport, Fl(just south of Tallahassee) and follow the paved road just east of the bridge....to the light house.
I would use jigs of any color, white, white/firetail, green, curly tails, yellow, etc. I would use topwater plugs of any kind...anything that makes a fuss.
I would try to catch a few pinfish (little shiners) and I would put them on a cork and fish about 2-3 feet deep.
I would expand my fishing area eastward to Aucilla River, (it's full of rocks), Econfina River, (full of rocks too) Both rivers have good ramps and I have seen many pontoon boats at either. I would contunue eastward to Keaton Beach in my expansion (anything can launch there--within reason)
This is a great area for saltwater fishing.
You'll love it. :P

Welcome Marv922.

I see pontoons being used on the flats quite often. With respect to places to wade you've already had some good information provided. I would also suggest you consider Wakula beach for wade fishing. It can be a very productive area and is relatively easy to get to. Look for Wakulla Beach road off of Hwy 98.

Keaton Beach would have to be my favorite Big Bend fishing spot, and I see people in pontoons every trip I make. Ocassionally we see wade fishers around the pavillion/park area, but i've never done it. As far as bait goes, somedays candycorn or electric chicken grubs under a cajun thunder can't be beat. Somedays live shrimp or pinfish are the only way to catch a limit. I usually go prepared for all three. Just watch out for the weather in the "toon", theres plenty of good fishing close enough to the channel to get in quick, if you stay close.

Good luck & good fishing

More than likely it will be Sunday when I go, however, i appreciate the info on bait location. Always need a good source in new areas.

Thanks again for all of the response.
